It’s not a medical term. There’s one old definition of appreciate that isn’t in any modern dictionaries but appears far down in the list of definitions in an old Merriam-Webster’s Unabridged (II, from the 1930s), of which I happen to have a copy. It’s “to be cognizant of through the senses”.
